Care built around the whole person

SIMHAR Swasthi Mandir is an integrated centre in Palakkad where psychiatry, geriatrics, rehabilitation and Ayurveda are practised by one team, in one building.

Who we are

A unit of Shalom Institute of Mental Health & Research

SIMHAR Swasthi Mandir brings together consultant psychiatry, geriatric medicine, psychiatric rehabilitation, classical Ayurveda and everyday general practice in a single centre at Mylampully, Palakkad.

Mental healthcare in Kerala is often split across places: one clinic diagnoses, another dispenses, a third offers therapy, and the patient carries the file between them. We built this centre so that does not have to happen. Consultation, investigation, treatment and medicines all sit under one roof, and the doctors involved in your care talk to each other directly.

What guides us

Care that feels calm.
Expertise that feels human.

Trust

Clear diagnosis, honest explanation and no promises we cannot keep.

Wellbeing

Treating the person and their daily life, not only the presenting symptom.

Dignity

Respect for patients, families, older adults and everyone in recovery.

Clarity

Plain language, unhurried consultations and time to ask questions.

Why we practise two systems together

“At SIMHAR Swasthi Mandir we treat Ayurveda as a complementary, holistic pathway inside a multidisciplinary model — not as an alternative to medicine, and never as a reason to stop treatment that is working.”

“Care begins with a full assessment by our Modern Psychiatry department. From there, patients may be referred to our Ayurveda department for appropriate therapies and wellness interventions, and where it is clinically suitable some patients are assessed and managed by the Ayurveda department directly.”

“We use Ayurveda-based therapies particularly in addiction, stress-related conditions, behavioural concerns and rehabilitation, and in selected psychiatric and psychosomatic presentations — always according to individual clinical need. The aim is to support physical and psychological wellbeing, recovery, rehabilitation and long-term reintegration, with the two teams properly coordinated throughout.”

“That coordination is the whole purpose of this centre. It is also the part that is most difficult to arrange anywhere else.”

The integration

Why we use both systems

Ayurveda and modern medicine answer different questions well. Used together and deliberately, they cover more ground than either does alone.

Accurate diagnosis, objective investigation and rapid, measurable relief in acute illness. When someone is in crisis, is not sleeping, or is severely unwell, this is what stabilises them quickly and safely.
Constitution, diet, routine and the slower work of restoring balance. Therapies such as Shirodhara and Panchakarma support sleep, stress and recovery in ways that complement medication rather than replace it.
Your psychiatrist and Ayurvedic physician review your assessment and investigations together, then agree one plan. You are told exactly what each part is for. Nothing is prescribed simply because it is available.
No, and we will never present it as one. Where medication is clinically indicated it is prescribed and reviewed by a consultant psychiatrist. Ayurvedic treatment is offered alongside it, never as a replacement, and never as a reason to stop treatment that is working.
